An original London Transport poster, Femme bien informée, designed by Harry Stevens, 1972. The poster was commissioned to promote daytrips to the Capital’s many museums and art galleries. Armed with the latest London Transport travel guide, the design depicts a 'knowledgeable woman' (‘femme bien informée') admiring a selection of famous paintings from the National Gallery Collection, including The Arnolfini Portrait (1434) by Jan van Eyck, The Fighting Temeraire (1839) by J M W Turner, Venice: The Basin of San Marco on Ascension Day (about 1740) by Canaletto, and Le Chapeau de Paille (1622-5) by Peter Paul Rubens. In contrast to the Old Masters on display, the female visitor is painted in the Cubist style of Pablo Picasso. A higher resolution image is available for viewing on request.
