Original, antique, poster: Summer Shell from May to October, designed by Edward McKnight Kauffer, 1939. This is one of the last posters Kauffer designed in the UK before returning to the USA in 1940. The photomontage design features a photograph of a summer hat superimposed with a graphic representation of a butterfly against a grassy background.

Probably the greatest poster designer working in interwar Britain, Kauffer had produced several outstanding designs for Shell Oil in the 1930s. The posters were displayed on the side of Shell lorries as part of a highly regarded publicity campaign. This copy belonged to the leading post war graphic designer Abram Games (more information here). A higher resolution image is available for viewing on request.
